When Planning Your Next St. Louis Trip, Consider The Theater

by Jane Leisteiner

When you think of live theater and orchestra events, you might think New York, Boston or San Francisco, but the city of St. Louis has an impressive selection of theater and music events throughout the year.

For a historic and musical experience, head to The Muny, which is the country's oldest and largest outdoor musical theater. The Muny began in 1916 with a production of "As You Like It," and continues to this day each summer with a mix of Broadway standards and more modern fair, such as Legally Blonde.

The Grand Center is another unique St. Louis offering. This four-block area includes galleries, museums, the historic Fox Theatre and Powell Symphony Hall, which is the home of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

The Fox Theatre, which opened in the late 1920s, offers an eclectic array of performances, from live music from popular artists such as Santana, Selana Gomez and Tony Bennett to shows by popular comedians. You will also find Broadway musicals, such as Memphis, Billy Elliot and Mamma Mia.

For an eclectic mix of artists in a historic setting, consider heading to the Sheldon Concert Hall. The hall itself dates to 1912 and has featured everything from musical acts to speeches from the likes of Albert Einstein and Dwight Eisenhower. Today there are several categories of musical events, such as the Notes From Home series that features local musicians to Jazz at the Sheldon, which is a mix of modern jazz and legendary artists.

There are also plenty of quirky and off-beat theaters and live music venues in St. Louis. Consider a trip to the Stray Dog Theatre, where local actors perform in a variety of theater productions. There are also dozens of blues and jazz venues throughout St. Louis, as well as venues such as the Touhill Performing Arts Center, where you'll find dance, opera, classical music, international music and plenty of jazz.

When searching for ideal St. Louis accommodations, consider the posh Fleur-De-Lys Mansion. This historic St. Louis bed & breakfast has been painstakingly restored, combining modern comforts while preserving many original design elements. There are four spacious guest rooms to choose from, each with a luxurious private bath.

The innkeepers offer plenty of amenities, from the beds topped with lavender-rinsed, 600-thread-count sheets and down comforters to the fluffy towels and L'occitane bath products in the private baths. You also will find a CD player, DVD player, iPod docking station, cable TV and wireless internet in each room. A full, gourmet breakfast also is served each morning.
