The Sony MDR-XB500 design is 100% hip-hop and clearly aimed straight at young customers who likely drive vehicles full of giant subwoofers and amps. The ear cups are simply huge. The pads are almost 2" thick and are nearly 4" in diameter. It must be confessed though that they are very comfortable, and if you are not concerned with the weird looks you will receive while you have them on, then you could wear them for days without being tired of them.

If you are able to look beyond the beanbag ear pads, the remainder of the headphone is extremely fashionable. I particularly like the classy outline. The broad black headband ends at the driver with silver circles that are concentric, and this assists in minimizing visual heft. The Sony logo also complements the styling as opposed to taking away from it which frequently happens. Generally, I am not in favor of headphones with cords on every driver as they have a tendency to constantly be in the way; however these headphones would not look good without them. All in all, these headphones look extremely awesome.

Completely designed by Sony, the very big driver units that are 40mm extra bass diaphragm correctly duplicate sounds that are of very low frequencies and provide reproductions that are forceful and deep bass. The model is known as the Sony MDR-XB500 and the XB represents Extra Bass. The Sony MDR-XB500 does not fail in that area. These are definitely headphones for bass-heads and are able to pump out a lot of bass that is not just well extended, but also shockingly controlled well with great speed for the amount. The bass is definitely the focus and it provides the headphones with a warm sound. The Sony MDR-XB500 depends on driver units that are 40mm to make sound and the final result is sound that is not very bass-heavy with more overall clarity and definition.The soundstage of the Sony MDR-XB500 is rather familiar with decent separation and air to it. The Sony MDR-XB500 has a good mixture of finesse and aggressiveness to them which is shocking. The majority of persons sound as if they agree with me. The Sony MDR-XB500 has a good energy and punch to them causing listening to music to be very fun. The Sony MDR-XB500s sound shockingly clean with excellent bass control. The upper highs and mids are definitely the frailest section of the sound from the Sony MDR-XB500; however they give an enjoyable, energetic audio that nearly compensates it. The close soundstage has a lovely feel to it and I really enjoy particular genres through them. The Sony MDR-XB500 has an excellent build quality for the cost and great comfort thanks to the large pads. The majority of reasonable bass focused headphones are inclined to have bloated and slow bass. The Sony MDR-XB500 manages to have properly controlled bass with excellent texture and extension on it. Bass heads who are searching for a budget choice would definitely be pleased with these.
