Christian Hip Hop Artists Today

by Joni Levy

The rap scene in terms of the Christian genre is one that has seen its fair share of disappointments. However, there are a few shining stars of this genre right now that are providing a good bit of credibility and these Christian hip hop artists have tracks that could easily rival the sounds you would hear on secular radio.

There are a number of names that you should know, and this article will give you the gateway to getting to know more about these artists. Through the upcoming paragraphs you will get introduced to likely the three most popular Christ-centered hip-hop acts as well as some up and coming musicians that you might want to check out before too much word gets out.

Giving back a serious edge and impressive delivery, you are going to see that right now the Christ-centered rappers are headed up by one man: Lecrae. He has several albums out right now, perhaps the most popular of these being After The Music Stops and Rebel. He has broken through some tough lines with popular tracks like 'Jesus Muzik', 'Take Me As I Am' and 'Prayin For You'.

You will find that gospel music is one that has allowed musicians to express themselves over many genres. Such is the case with Toby Mac, who started out being part of the global phenomenon DC Talk as one of lead men. Since the group has gone their separate ways, Toby has set his sights on the rap genre offering his unique spin on hip-hop. With supercharged anthems, Toby is able to fuse together rock, funk, pop and big bass into one undeniably addictive sound.

You will find that another rapper that cannot be denied in the genre is KJ-52. While he is likely best known for his tracks 'Dear Slim' and 'Dear Slim Part 2', as these were featured on MTV, KJ has several albums now and quite an extensive following. His fast paced delivery and comical topic choice have him compared with Eminem in many reviews. So if you are looking for a crossover from secular to inspirational, the middle ground might be KJ-52.

Now there are a few artists that are just about to really break loose in the genre. You would do well to learn about these artists now so that you can check them out before they reach superstar status. Gotee Records, a company owned and operated by Toby Mac has pushed out a couple unique hip-hop acts in B Reith and John Reuben. B Reith has a unique approach in fusing carefully crafted rap verses over hook choruses that are hard to get out of your head. John Reuben might not always do hip hop, but what he does, he does over acoustic tracks like Benjamin Gilbert of Bought Records does.

These are just a few items that people should consider if they want to know about Christian hip hop artists. If you were curious about which musicians need to be on your rotation, and you are a believer and a rap fan, these are a few must haves for your player.
