Can't Buy Me Love Tab - Finger-style Lesson
We will cover the Introduction and the first part or the Part A portion of the song in this lesson. In Part B or the second lesson in this series, we will cover the second and last half of the song.
Your first objective is to work of the effective brushing technique of the chords in the introduction. This is implemented with the Thumb of the Right Hand with a smooth, slow, brushing action over the strings.
Not only should you hold your left hand fingers in place for the brushed chords in the introduction, but for the most part, hold them for the notes that follow as well. This will create a smooth, effortless mood for the introduction.
Can't Buy Me Love - Playing The Rhythm Chords
The correct rhythm chords are also placed in the TAB and notation for your convenience. The chord diagrams are located above the notation score. Not only can you refer to these diagrams for the rhythm portion of the song, they can also be very useful for giving you "clues" as the chords you will need to form for your finger-style melody.
Obviously, for those of you interested in only the rhythm chords, these will come in very handy. As with many finger-style songs, this arrangement uses the standard alternating bass for the majority of the lesson. This is accomplished with the thumb of the right hand.
Also, the lead or "melody" notes for the piece are picked with the index, middle and ring finger of the right hand. You should attempt to hold the left hand fingering for the chord forms wherever possible and only adjust fingering as needed to play certain melody notes.
This will allow you to more easily play the melody line and it will additionally keep you aware of your position within the score. When absolutely necessary lift your left hand finger from the indicated chord forms.
Notes On The F Chord
F Major chords always present some problems for the finger-style guitarist.Thankfully, there are several manners you can play the F chord that are perfectly acceptable. The method that is used in this lesson uses the left hand thumb to play the 6th or bass string for the F chord in lieu of playing the more typical full bar chord.
Of course the method that is chosen is completely up to you and is somewhat dependent on the action and type of guitar you are using to play the lesson.
Syncopation Notes of Can't Buy Me Love
As with most of the arrangements by Chet Atkins and for most finger-style guitars for that matter, there is a fair amount of syncopation in the melody line. In using syncopation in the melody line, the notes are moved slightly out of their normal position in the score, which creates interest in the song.
The first syncopated note is shown in the TAB in the first note of the Part A portion of the TAB and notation. For this example, study the last note in the 7th measure of the lesson material.
The normal position for this note would be the first beat in the 8th measure, but in this instance it is moved backward by 1/2 beat and placed in the last beat of the 7th measure. You will find many more examples of this in this and subsequent finger-style lessons.
